New year, holidays, consumption

I’ve arrived in Shanghai, and am observing lunar new year celebrations. I had hoped to do this last year but the flu got in the way.

The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed. Most of the shops are closed but enough is open for people to be buying gifts, hampers of fruits seem common.

Those not shopping and visiting freinds and relatives and are out enjoying the winter sun seem to be just relaxing. Nanjing Road and Old Town are packed. Huahai Lu, Changle Lu and Xintiandi are very quiet.

Photos will be posted once I’m settled in Ningbo.

Gung Hay Fat Choy Darryn! Glad that you have arrived safe and sound in China and that you are enjoying Chinese lunar New Year without any illnesses bugging you.

Here in Wollaton the Chinese students residing close to me are celebrating the New Year with an amazing amount of firecrackers and fireworks. At one house they have signs up on both sides of the main door, they are red ones with gold script on them which I can only presume are welcoming in the year of the rat to that particular home. The local news has been highlighting various celebrations taking place in local cities and all the English presenters are trying to get their tongues around how to say happy new year in Cantonese.

Safe journey to Ningbo and hope your time there is happy and successful.
